Present Your Work at the Fair
The Social Justice Children’s Book Fair champions books by and about Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, LGBQT+ people and families, immigrants, and books with social justice themes – especially books that encourage readers to question existing systems and power structures. Unlike some book fairs, we encourage stories that are self-published, with small/alternative publishers, as well as with larger traditional publishers.
Aside from children’s book creators, we also dedicate space to other forms of engagement with children around social justice issues (music, performance), and non-profit projects supporting access and literacy.
Among other topics, we are looking for stories that address themes related to:
Activism, Anti-racism, Ablism, Book Banning, Body positivity, Changemakers, Civil Rights, Voting, Civic Engagement, Class Consciousness, Colonialism, Community Organizing, Mutual Aid, Collective Action, Displacement and Diaspora, Environmental/Climate Justice, Feminism, Fighting Poverty, Food & Water Justice, Gentrification and Housing, Gun Violence, Healthcare Access and Discrimination, Human Rights, Immigration and immigrant Rights, Imperialism, Incarceration, Indigenous Sovereignty, Labor History and Organizing, Neurodiversity, Patriarchy/Sexism, Police Brutality, Queer Positivity/Diversity: Gender Expression, Trans, Non-Binary, Intersex, War and Militarism.

Volunteer
For the past decade, the SJCBF has been a labor of love for a small committee of planning members who volunteer their time and effort to organize this literary event. With a small budget yet big dreams for the future, we rely on volunteers to help make the festival successful as an integral part of the Bay Area Literary Arts movement.
